Mexica Youth Cirlce

The Mexica Youth Circle are youth between the ages of 11 through 16. We do many activities like learn about our indigenous cultures through activities like Azteca Danza, the Nauhtl language (the language of the Aztecs), and Mayan math to name a few. We also take the time to do fun other things like go bowling, camping, have a BBQ, and hang out with other youth.

We formed the Mexica Youth Circle to develop our own leadership as Chicano/Latino youth. We recognize that by organizing our selves as youth and by not adults, we create our own voice within our community.

We believe we are never to young to be a leader in our community. Through respect, honor, self-discipline, organizing and unity we create our own voice as Chicano/Latino youth.

We are strong, intelligent, powerful, beautiful, and warrior like. This is our path to self-determination. So join the path of the young warrior and feed your inner self culture, history, honor, and a whole lot of fun.

Why the ages of 11 to 16
In the tradition of our ancestors, we became of age at the age of 13. Today we often associate this with the quinceta (15) which is two years later than when we were expected to be more adult like and mature in our behaviors and responsibilities.

In keeping with the 13, we have a Mexica ceremony for us when we turn 13. It is a beautiful and meaningful ceremony. When we ask for a 13 ceremony, we are asking for everyone to treat us more adult like and at the same time, have the expectation upon us to be more mature and ready to take on more responsibly.

It is with the 13 ceremony in mind that we start the circle at age 11, to begin sharing what we know and to prepare one for two years prior to their 13 ceremony. However, we also recognize that we need our older youth to remain close to us to keep helping and teaching us all. So that is why we stay until we are 16.
